Laura bought her house in Trenton in November 2005
What alerted you to the possibility of living in Trenton? Where did you hear about it?
I have known about Trenton most of my life since I study history. This is one of the most historical cities in the USA, not only because of its role in the American Revolution, but before and after as well. Being from California, I was excited about visiting it. What surprised me was how rich the architecture is here. What a visually stimulating city when it comes to its buildings! There are about 5 buildings I would love to possess. So far, I possess only one of them. But I am working on the rest.
What have you found to be the most attractive aspects of the City?
That it is by the river, that it is a small city – no traffic jams that go on and on and that it is a friendly city. I am always bumping into friends whenever I am walking to the downtown area. I also find that strangers will chat too, and then they are no longer strangers.
What attracted you to the home you bought? What are its 3 (or more) most appealing features?
Architecture is a hobby of mine, so I have always had a discerning eye for good properties. After determining that the structure is sound, a home must have the following qualities:
-
Good floor plan
-
Space for a studio
-
A garage
Additionally, I need a fenced yard for my dog.
As for the neighborhood, this one, Riverside, is close to the river, and I like being close to some sort of body of water, within walking distance to a post office, and close to all main transportation arteries and facilities: Rt 1,29,129, I95, 195 and 295, Trenton train station and the Riverline. It doesn’t get any better than this.
What have you done with your home since you moved in? What plans have you for it in the near future?
-
Finished the attic
-
Painted the second floor, including stripping off old wallpaper where needed
-
Painted the kitchen and dining room; installed ceiling fan in dining room
-
Installed new windows in the basement
-
Installed new door in the kitchen
-
The living room is in progress. So far I have removed all the old paint and wallpaper, leaving a portion of the original wallpaper on the west wall. The fireplace mantel is being stripped down to its lovely black ash wood. The grail covering is being stripped down to the brass. A light fixture has been installed and the ceiling is painted. The walls (gypsum) are being prepped for painting by first being washing with a bleach/water mix, which will be followed by a vinegar wash.
-
Painting the bathroom is in the near future.
What have your friends and family thought of your move to Trenton? Were they involved?
My Trenton friends encouraged me to move here. My local family members were concerned, but they believe the myths about this city, and now they know the reality. It is not a dangerous place to live.
Describe your experience of buying a home?
E.g. was it a smooth process? Was your Realtor knowledgeable/responsive/helpful?
As smooth as any home buying process can be. There are always glitches, but that is normal. Howard knows Trenton, which is a tremendous help. I am not speaking of just what neighborhoods are where, but what the inside scoop is on those neighborhoods. That is a necessary component to have in a realtor when moving to a city in transition, like Trenton.
Would you recommend your Realtor to a friend or relative looking to buy or sell?
Absolutely.
